FROM THE PAGES OF THE RAZOR'S EDGE
 |
The following is a description written by
one of our group members for his recent auction of issues of The Razor's
Edge on Ebay. We felt the description was so good that we've reprinted it
here.
The Razor's Edge:
Ahead of its time in more ways than one..
The publication of a quality magazine is no easy business, and in the
late 70s it was much harder. The Razor's Edge was published without the benefit
of digital imaging, desktop publishing or digital printing.
|
 |
I have some experience with the printing business and the advances
that have been made in just a couple of decades. In the 70s, copy was printed
in galleys from a typesetting machine, photos were printed in a darkroom
using a screen and cropped with a knife, and lines and borders were applied
using tape. All elements were pasted together by hand, shot to a negative,
made into a plate and then finally put on a press. The whole process was
much more difficult, time consuming and costly than it would be today. That
does not even take into account the difficulty to be had in finding models
willing to submit to clippers, lather and razor. |
 |
The fact that people like Captain Stanley, Bob Fitzgerald and the
others behind RE were willing to put so much into its publication, and the
production of photo sets and 8mm films that were also sold, is surely a testament
to their love of the shaven style. |
 |
Indeed, just building sufficient circulation must have been a challenge.
Today, someone with a unique product geared to a small but enthusiastic market
can construct a web site and like-minded people from around the world will
seek them out, as they have with the Hair Enthusiast Hotline. RE lacked that
tool and obviously lacked the funds for the kind of advertising campaign
it would have needed. Thus, it served a relatively small readership. By the
time the magazine gained nationwide attention on the Real People television
show, it was already too late. |
 |
Only about a dozen issues were published, and not many copies of
each. When you think about it, we are very lucky it was published at all.
I was one of those people who first learned of RE through Real People.
I was just a kid at the time, and I had no idea it was already out of business.
It stuck with me as a sort of 'holy grail' of headshaving. I know I'm not
the only one. |
 |
I was eventually able to learn what had happened to RE, and became aware
of Captain Stanley and his Yankee Clipper, an attempt to revive RE using
modern publishing and promotional methods. That, sadly, has also ceased
publication.
It was not until April 2000 that I acquired my first genuine issue of
RE. I must say, I was not disappointed. The models are beautiful, the photography
is excellent, and the magazine itself is of sufficient quality to have held
up beautifully over more than 20 years. |
 |
As 70s nostalgia, they are terrific. My collection has since expanded
to the eight issues shown here and by my opinion, they still make the grade,
even by today's standards. There was little material on headshaving, and
nothing like R.E. available in the 70s. Farrah Fawcett, with her golden locks,
was the popular ideal. Persis Khambatta, who was the first beautiful bald
woman many of us remember, had not yet shaved her head (actually, she appears
in issue 9). |
 |
This was before the home video revolution, when someone might have stayed
up late to catch THX 1138 or some other movie. Star Trek: The Motion Picture
was still in the works. There were few options. I can't imagine what it must
have been like for readers to see one of these magazines for the first time.RE
has certainly had an influence. It showed many people that they were not
weird for finding bald women attractive -- by showing attractive bald women.
Even today, names like Italia, Helen Sanger and Janet DeVito pop up in
discussions between people who remember RE. Those women and others promoted
the bald look for women when it was still unheard of. |
 |
For those of us who were not lucky enough to get RE in the 70s,
the price of these rare gems has gone up. The cheapest issue I have purchased
was more than 10 times its original $3 cover price. I've seen some of the
better issues auction for more than $100 US. |
 |
With few of these printed, and few owners willing to part with them,
Razor's Edge has become one of the most collectible pieces of headshaving
material. If you are fortunate enough to own any issues of this classic magazine,
I hope you are taking very good care of them. My only complaint with mine
is that I keep them safely stored and only look at them once in a while.
